In Search of Something More
In Search of Something More
Prior to being locked up in prison I cared for nobody but myself. Women were just an end to a means. People were things to be manipulated—a way to get what I wanted. I sold drugs, drank, stole others property, and spent time thinking up worse things to do. My life was out of control without any direction whatsoever.
During my incarceration I have witnessed the actions of others, such as taking from those that don’t have much and causing harm to those who cannot defend themselves. When I see the things that I once did it causes me to reflect back upon who I was. I do not like what I see! These demonstrations of personal gratification with the belief that “I” am all that matters have shown me how truly shallow I was. My heart and soul was in search of something more without knowing what or why.
With the help and teachings in the IFI program and the unwavering dedication of the staff and volunteers, I have been able to satisfy my wants and desires, with GOD! I have learned to respect others thoughts, property, and personal well-being. I’ve improved my communication skills, developed conflict resolution skills, and learned how to engage in healthy relationships. I have an understanding of the connection between my worldview, my values, and my behavior. I have a new direction in life—a vision to become a productive member of society. I now believe in more than the proverbial “I.” It’s not all about me; it’s about community and making a positive difference. God bless you and I thank everyone for giving me a chance.
