Rape Commission Questions Attorney General Holder’s Proposed Prison Rape Standards

March 15, 2011 by Ryan Sanders

The Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates that on average 124 adult and juvenile inmates are sexually assaulted in US prisons every day. The Attorney General has announced plans to significantly weaken the standards that will hold prison officials accountable for eliminating rape in their prisons.

Please join members of the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission (NPREC) at the press conference to discuss the weakened standards and urge the public to write the Attorney General to strengthen his proposed standards:

Where: The National Press Club

Fourth Estate Room
529 14th Street Northwest
Washington D.C., DC 20045
(202) 662-7500

When: Wednesday, March 23 at 9:30AM

Who: Members of the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission.

Why: Challenge Attorney General Eric Holder’s proposed prison rape standards.

The public has until Monday, April 4 to comment on the Attorney General’s proposed changes to the prison rape standards. Here are just a few of the changes he proposes:

  • Allows Cross Gender Pat Downs
  • Exempts Immigration Prisons from Rape Standards
  • Allows Prison Systems to Audit Themselves
  • Eliminates requirement that prisons enforce the standards and merely requires them to have a plan. The penalty for not implementing the plan: Develop another plan!

Please come and listen to the commission members as they discuss the AG’s proposed standards. Your voice will help protect the inmates who have no voice in this process.
