Don Walker has walked a unique path to his current role as a volunteer Bible teacher in two Kansas prisons. It started with a 25-year career as a pastor at a Kansas City church, and developed during a short stint as a prison guard in the detention center in his hometown of Leavenworth, Kansas. For the past three years, he has served as a teacher and counselor to inmates in both the Leavenworth Detention Center and the state prison in nearby Lansing.
On Wednesday (August 17), Walker received special recognition for his services from the group that manages the federal detention center in Leavenworth. The warden at the detention center praised Walker and other volunteers for “keeping sanity in our prisons.”
To Walker, this sanity comes from the messages and teachings found in the Bible. “The Bible gives [the prisoners] moral principles that many of them have never had,” he says.
A profile of Mr. Walker was published in Sunday’s Kansas City Star. If you want to learn more about how you can reach out to those behind bars with a message of hope and forgiveness, please visit https://www.www.www.prisonfellowship.org/get-involved.
