Over the summer, Prison Fellowship intern Tanner Wilson visited Washington, DC, to ask people in front of the Supreme Court building some general questions about the criminal justice system, and to get their thoughts on how to best reform it.
While the answers and solutions vary from person to person, there is a level of consensus that the current system incarcerates too many people. Respondents underestimate the length of sentences for simple drug possession and question the accuracy of the term “corrections” when talking about incarceration. Suggestions on improving the justice system include eliminating mandatory minimum sentencing, improving the public defender process, and greater education on the issues surrounding crime and incarceration.
