Insider: From Cartels to Christ

January 30, 2017 by Emily Harris Greene

“I needed to carry a gun every day,” shares Jorge Garcia. “Your own people—you can’t trust them.’

When Garcia was a child, his father brought the family to the United States to have a better life. But Garcia began using drugs. At age 13, Garcia was a drug trafficker.

“When you’re a child, a kid, you don’t know where [the drugs] are going to take you,” says Garcia.

Drugs took Garcia behind bars. He was an addict for 28 years, and soon turned to organized crime. Garcia hoped drugs and crime would bring him happiness. Instead, he found happiness in someone else.

“Happiness doesn’t come in money,” Garcia explains. “Happiness comes when you have peace. When you know Jesus. I mean, when I [met] Jesus, my life changed completely.”

Jorge Garcia is now the California field director for Prison Fellowship®—spending his days visiting prisoners struggling with the life of crime he left behind.
