Planning a Prison Visit? (4 Helpful Resources)

November 19, 2019 by Emily Harris Greene

What to Know Before You Walk Through Those Prison Gates

A Hope Event volunteer prays with a female prisoner

Visiting prison is like going to another country. You must abide by the prison's own culture, rules, and expectations. So, whether you're visiting a loved one in prison or serving as a Prison Fellowship® volunteer, it's helpful to know a little bit about the world you're walking into.

We've created several resources that can help you prepare for a prison visit. Every prison is different, but the following resources should provide useful guidelines.

4 HELPFUL RESOURCES WHEN PLANNING A PRISON VISIT

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PRISON
First, discover answers to commonly asked questions about prison. For example, want to know the difference between jail and prison? Curious as to how prisoners typically spend their days? Our FAQ provides a great foundation for anyone entering a correctional facility for the first time.

VISITING ROOM SABOTAGE
Secondly, remember that prison visitation days are stressful, for the visitor and the prisoner. Read our 10 guidelines on how to have a constructive conversation during your prison visit.

TALKING WITH PRISONERS
Thirdly, you may wonder, "What can I possibly say to someone incarcerated? How will I be able to relate?" Find out how friendly conversations can have lasting impact.

PRAYING FOR PRISONERS
Finally, remember that your relationship with a prisoner doesn't end when you walk out those gates. Commit to praying for prisoners to grow in their relationships—with God, their families, and one another.

REAL RESTORATION IS HOLISTIC

Nearly 2.2 million Americans are behind bars. Incarceration touches all of us, and it can produce broken relationships, victimizations, despair, and instability. We must do better. Real restoration begins by addressing the cycle of crime on all fronts—in prison and out—and engaging in a cycle of renewal.

Do you have a loved one incarcerated? Is your church looking to start a prison ministry? Get involved with Prison Fellowship to find the resources and support you need on this journey.
