Prisons in Alabama are currently holding almost twice as many individuals as their capacity and the state has the 4th highest incarceration rate in the country. In response to this situation, the state embarked on criminal justice reform in 2015 with the passage of SB 67. This bill is expected to reduce state's prison population by more than 4,200 people and avert more than $380 million in future costs. "This is the first step in a long road we have ahead to fixing our corrections system." explained Senator Cam Ward (R): In contrast to these reforms, Governor Bentley unsuccessfully sought legislation in 2016 that would provide for the construction of four new state prisons at a cost of $800 million.

PRISON FELLOWSHIP IN ALABAMA
Prison Fellowship's victories in the state include the passage of Senate Bill 267 in 2011, which strengthened Alabama's probation and parole systems and furthered the goal of proportional punishment by eliminating economic discrimination in sentencing determinations.
In 2018, Prison Fellowship is advocating for policymakers in Alabama to think outside the bars when it comes to holding young people accountable for crime. This includes giving our support to the recommendations of the Alabama Juvenile Justice Task Force, which reflect the human dignity and value of each person, contribute to stronger families, wisely steward taxpayer dollars, and keep neighborhoods safe.
