Hello Richard,
I to have had my faith tested and I know where you are coming from. Sometimes I use Psalm 16 paraphrased :
Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust.
You are my Lord
My goodness is nothing apart from You.
O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup;
You maintain my lot.
I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
I ave set the Lord always before me;
He is at my right hand and I shall not be moved.
Thherfore my my heart is glad, my body rests in hope.
You will show me the path of life, a fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore.

O, Lord God,
I pray for Richard, that You will watch over him. That the Holy Spirit will give him strength and guidance everyday of his life.
Thank you Lord for hearing my prayer.
