With 40 years of experience helping restore men and women behind bars, Prison Fellowship advocates for federal and state criminal justice reforms that transform those responsible for crime, validate victims, and encourage communities to play a role in creating a safe, redemptive, and just society.

In recent months Governor Hogan has undertaken significant efforts that will eventually lead to reforms in the state’s criminal justice system. In late 2016, a Workgroup on Collateral Consequences, called for by the Justice Reinvestment Act, was created to study the barriers to employment faced by individuals with a criminal record and provide solutions for reducing such barriers. This was followed in 2017 by announcement of a Justice Victims Initiative which seeks reforms to better equip state agencies in responding to individuals who are a victim of crime.

PRISON FELLOWSHIP IN MARYLAND

Prison Fellowship victories in the state include contributing to the enactment of the Justice Reinvestment Act, which is expected to reduce the prison population by over 1,000 in the next 10 years and allow reinvestment of $80 million into programs intended to prevent future crime. Reforms in this Act will ensure a justice system that is characterized by proportional punishment, respect for the dignity of every person, and a constructive culture. In the years to come, the provision of this law will take effect and many more reforms can be made to build upon its success.
