HOW MANY WOMEN ARE INCARCERATED IN THE UNITED STATES?

Women make up more than 7 percent of the total prison population in the United States. Of every 100,000 adult females, 82 are imprisoned.

Oklahoma has the highest state female imprisonment rate at 151 women imprisoned out of every 100,000 female residents. Meanwhile, Maine has the lowest state female imprisonment rate, with 132 incarcerated out of every 100,000 women. (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2016)

Most incarcerated women are housed in jails and state prisons. In 2014, over 900,000 women were on probation. (The Sentencing Project, 2016)
