Prison Fellowship believes that no person is beyond God’s reach of redeeming love. That goes for every woman behind bars today. We celebrate the transformation of incarcerated women and pray for those who do not yet know the love of Christ.
Here are 10 Bible verses to pray over and share with our mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters behind bars.
For the woman who seeks to know God
“Come to Me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
—Matthew 11:28–30
For the woman who wants forgiveness
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
—1 John 1: 9
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me.”
—Psalm 51:10–11
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
—Ephesians 2:8–9
For the woman who feels ashamed
“Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood. For your Maker is your husband—the Lord Almighty is His name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.”
—Isaiah 54:4–5
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
—2 Corinthians 5:17
For the woman who is afraid
“If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to You; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to You.”
—Psalm 139:11–12
For the woman who feels alone
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
—Deuteronomy 31:8
For the woman who prays for deeper faith in Jesus
“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’”
—John 4:13–14
For the woman who needs hope
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am.”
—John 14:1–3
We pray these Scriptures from the Bible will be a source of encouragement to your loved one in prison, and that God will use His Word to grow their faith. His Word never returns to Him empty but will accomplish what He desires and achieve the purpose for which He sent it (Isaiah 55:11).
All Scriptures are from the New International Version of the Holy Bible.
HAVE YOUR LOVED ONE tell her chaplain about Create: New Beginnings by Martha Ackerman and Stephanie Segel. Based on a program created by women for women, this book will help women reflect on their story, explore their emotions, and deepen their relationship with God. As they complete ten simple art projects, they’ll see how creativity works as a tool to tap into their past—and change their future.
