Special Bibles Make an Extra-Large Impact

    by Stacia Ray

Addiction—whether it’s to an illegal substance, power, money, or something else—comes at a high price. In its grip, many people make decisions that cost them their freedom, their health, their relationships, and their hope. But the healing power of the Gospel is priceless.

According to a recent Prison Fellowship® survey of prison chaplains, most prisoners do not have easy access to their own Bible. And when Bibles are available behind bars, they're too often in difficult-to-read translations or printed in a font too small for the aging prison population to read. Further, some prisoners can't understand Bibles written in English.

To help meet the diverse needs of the incarcerated population, Inside Journal®, Prison Fellowship's quarterly newspaper for men and women behind bars, has partnered with Tyndale House Publishers to offer Inside Journal NLT Life Recovery Bibles for free, in English or Spanish, to prisoners who request them by mail. These Bibles are large-print and use language that's easy to understand. With special devotional content based on the 12-step model, the Inside Journal Bibles are a variation of Tyndale's Life Recovery Bibles, the No. 1-selling recovery Bible that has helped millions of readers overcome their strongholds.

FEEDBACK FROM BEHIND BARS

The response to this Bible offer has been overwhelming, with request letters from prisoners pouring in each week.

"I really need a Bible, but I have a problem reading small print. Could I please have a Bible of my very own, and could it be large print so I can read it? I have been using our prison church's Bibles and they are all small print and mostly damaged and written in."

Linda, Michigan Prisoner

"I used to be a drug addict, and I think the recovery Bible will help with my new journey with the Lord."

Michael, Florida Prisoner

"I'm a recovering addict and just recently getting back into my Word. This Bible is easy for me to read and breaks it down so I can understand it."

Cassandra, Washington Prisoner

"Although I am not an alcoholic or a drug addict, I have found that many, if not all, people have something in their lives that separates them from God, and a Recovery Bible can be very helpful to guide them back on track. I would greatly appreciate [an Inside Journal] Life Recovery Bible."

Ezequiel, California Prisoner

"We are inmates at Davies County Detention Center, and we study God's Word in our cell. Most of us are drug offenders who are turning our lives around … We are hungry for the Word [and would all like an Inside Journal Life Recovery Bible]."
