Club Hope

Posted March 20, 2014
A Hope for Kids, Inc. volunteer wraps Angel Tree presents. Hope for Kids, Inc. launched this past December with the vision of reaching underprivileged kids in the Greater Springfield Massachusetts area with acts of kindness, spiritual renewal, authentic relationships, and physical nourishment. As the founder of Hope for Kids, I began searching for ways to meet these children so we could begin ministering to them. I made a call to Prison Fellowship, asking if there were any

A Sad Joke

“15 Years In Environment Of Constant Fear Somehow Fails To Rehabilitate Prisoner,” proclaims the headline.  The subsequent article tells the story of Terry Raney, a recent parolee who has been reincarerated for assault and battery. Albert Gunderson, warden of the Woodbourne Correctional Facility, seems baffled by Raney’s return to prison.  “It just doesn’t seem possible that an inmate could live for a decade and a half in a completely dehumanizing environment in which violent felons were

Written on the Heart

Ronnie Kirkconnell wears long sleeves to cover the tattooed forearms that hint at his past, but he’s not afraid to bare the love of God that’s inked upon his heart. Ronnie and Jan Customers receive more than average service when they walk into Stamp Therapy in Kentwood, Michigan. With a Bible on the counter and a Jesus fish hanging in the window, prayer pervades the stamp shop owned by Ronnie’s wife, Jan. “Right there, on the floor, we

It Takes a Village

I often wonder what God is up to when Angel Tree season comes around — and this past season was very different from previous years. We had only four local children needing sponsors. But soon, a list showing hundreds of unsponsored children in our region of California came in an email, with a request for sponsors. It took only a moment of “W.W.J.D.?” before my pastor and I agreed that we would, in faith, agree to

“Because They Were From Me”

With Christmas almost here, Prison Fellowship and churches around the country are in the midst of throwing Angel Tree parties and delivering gifts and the Gospel to prisoners’ children. An encouraging letter from Kimberly, whose family was blessed by Angel Tree eight times while she was in prison, came to us just a few weeks ago. Her touching words are a powerful reminder of the children that need to feel the love of their parents

On a Sleigh Ride … to Florida

Posted December 19, 2013
The Angel Tree sleigh ride has begun! Three Prison Fellowship interns are traveling from Virginia to Tampa to connect with Angel Tree churches, their volunteers, and families affected by incarceration at Angel Tree parties down the East Coast. Last Christmas, 551 children of prisoners in Tampa went unsponsored at Christmastime, so this year, Angel Tree is raising awareness for these kids through local marketing efforts. As part of this “It Starts With a Gift” campaign, the

For Our Kids

Posted December 16, 2013
When our kids were growing up, Christmas was a joyful, relaxing time for our family. Our son and daughter would look forward to the Christmas break with increasing excitement as the days got shorter and darker. But imagine, instead, a child who dreads Christmas. For this little boy or girl, Christmas is about the empty place at the dinner table, the shamed silence when their friends talk about the gifts they received, and the sleepless nights

Helping the Invisible Kingdom Become Visible

Prison Fellowship President and CEO Jim Liske recently appeared on “First Person with Wayne Shepherd,” a nationally syndicated radio program, to talk about Chuck Colson, Prison Fellowship and Angel Tree. During the interview, Jim told host Wayne Shepherd about his upbringing on the family farm.  “I learned everything I learned about stewardship growing up on the farm and caring for God’s creation,” he said.  “… When I look at Angel Tree, we’re preparing the soil by

A Year in Review

Posted December 2, 2013
As 2013 comes to a close in just a few weeks, we thankfully reflect on the many lives of prisoners that God has restored over the past 12 months. Although the world is a broken place, God has worked miracles to rebuild shattered lives and restore hearts to Him. We invite you to celebrate with us some of the amazing things God has done through Prison Fellowship Ministries (PFM) this year: February: Charles Colson Task Force The

Bringing Prisoners’ Children Out of the Shadows

Dr. Margo Nance is one of the lucky ones. She and her six siblings grew up in a safe, loving environment, with Christian parents to protect and instruct them. “When we left church and came home, it was an addendum to church,” laughs Dr. Nance, remembering how Christ-centered activities permeated the four walls of her childhood abode. Many children living in America today – 2.7 million of them, including one in nine African-American children – aren’t building such

Insight from Prisoners Who Write

Posted November 15, 2013
A website called The American Reader recently posted a fascinating article titled “In Conversation: Excerpted Letters From Incarcerated Writers.” Journalist Andrea Jones interviews, via letters, several people who are currently in prison and spend their time writing. Jones introduces the compilation of letters by explaining that media coverage about the prison system remains disproportionately low compared to the number of people the system affects. She attributes this to journalists’ lack of access to investigate the system.

A Cycle of Promises

The Angel Tree program sounded too good to be true to Lisa. Would people in the free world really give Christmas presents to her son and daughter while she was incarcerated? She signed Coleby and Cortnie up for Angel Tree with a small hope that her children would receive a gift that let them know she still loved them so much. She lost her children … her freedom … what more did she have to lose? Months passed

Thank you for participating in WMIT’s Angel Tree Day! Your Angel Tree ornament will arrive soon. May it brighten your season just as you have brightened the lives of prisoners’ children with your generous gift. 2.7 million children in the U.S. have a mom or dad in prison. Show Jesus to a Prisoner’s Child

The following post originally aired as a BreakPoint radio commentary on October 31, 2013.  To learn more about BreakPoint, to hear previous broadcasts, or to find a radio station in your area, click here. It was back in 1998, when I was practically a kid writer here at BreakPoint, that I first heard about Prison Fellowship’s amazing Angel Tree program. I was moved by how much Chuck Colson and the Prison Fellowship staff poured themselves into making
